Roundup Weed Killer and Cancer: Jury Awards $289 Million Verdict Against Monsanto
Last week, a jury awarded DeWayne Johnson a $289 million verdict against Monsanto after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer after using Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer. The products liability lawsuit claimed that Monsanto failed to warn users of increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other forms of cancer such as B cell or T Cell non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, including its many subtypes such as follicular lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and hairy cell leukemia as a result of exposure to Roundup herbicide, especially the main ingredient glyphosate.
The products liability attorneys in the case alleged that Monsanto knew for more than 30 years about the link between Roundup and cancer but intentionally did not warn the public. The case further alleged that Monsanto marketed Roundup to be as safe as table salt.
Those in Las Vegas that would be most at risk for developing cancer from Roundup exposure would be garden center employees, nursery employees, landscapers and farm workers. As of July 2018, there were 470 pending lawsuits against Monsanto due to Roundup exposure.
Those with successful Las Vegas Roundup lawsuit could recover past medical expenses, future medical expenses, past pain and suffering, future pain and suffering, emotional distress, out of pocket expenses and possibly punitive damages.
